Shipping Container FAQ

Every question we get asked weekly — prices, sizes, clearances, permits, grades, and timelines — answered with the same numbers we give paying customers.

These are the questions we answer on the phone every week — with the same numbers we give paying customers. For deeper dives, every answer links to a full guide. Can't find yours? Call 862-236-3503 — a two-minute conversation beats an hour of forum archaeology.

Pricing & Buying

How much does a shipping container cost in New Jersey?

Used cargo-worthy 20ft units run about $2,000–$3,200 delivered in North Jersey; used 40ft about $2,600–$4,000; new one-trip units roughly $1,500–$2,500 above the equivalent used box. See the full price guide or call 862-236-3503 for today's number.

What sizes do shipping containers come in?

The standard market sizes are 20ft (160 sq ft) and 40ft (320 sq ft), each in standard height (8'6") or High Cube (9'6"). Other lengths exist but carry specialty pricing — for most uses, 20ft or 40ft is the practical answer.

How much space does delivery need?

A 20ft needs about 60–75 ft of straight run-up; a 40ft needs 100–120 ft — plus 12 ft of width and 15–16 ft of overhead clearance. Concrete, asphalt, gravel, or firm dry ground all work as surfaces.

Do I need a permit for a shipping container in NJ?

Temporary containers on private property usually don't need one; street placement almost always does; permanent placement is a zoning/accessory-structure question. Rules vary by municipality — see our NJ permit guide for the pattern.

Should I buy new or used?

Used cargo-worthy for function per dollar; new one-trip for appearance, maximum lifespan, and modified builds. The price gap is typically $1,500–$2,500. Both keep contents dry when graded honestly.

Renting & Ownership

Can I rent instead of buying?

Yes — monthly rentals (3-month minimum) with delivery and pickup, and rent-to-own plans with a 5% deposit and 12–48 month terms, no early-payoff penalty. Renting wins under ~18 months of use; buying wins past that.

How long does a shipping container last?

A one-trip unit gives 25–35 years; a used cargo-worthy box 15–25 with basic care. The two biggest lifespan factors are keeping the underside off standing water and maintaining door gaskets.

The Containers Themselves

Are shipping containers waterproof?

Yes — they're built to survive ocean crossings. Any honestly graded one-trip, cargo-worthy, or WWT container should not leak. Condensation from temperature swings is a separate issue, solved cheaply with vents.

Can a container be moved after it's placed?

Yes, with an empty-container relocation (same tilt-bed process in reverse). It costs a delivery fee, which is why we confirm placement and door orientation carefully the first time.

Logistics & Payment

Do you buy containers back?

Ask when you're ready — depending on condition and market we can often quote a buyback or point you to resale. Containers hold value well; a used box typically resells within a few hundred dollars of its purchase price.

What payment methods do you accept?

Card, e-check, or Zelle in advance — or pay-on-delivery in eligible areas. Rent-to-own plans are paid monthly on a fixed schedule with a known early-buyout figure.

How fast can you deliver?

Delivery usually lands within 10 business days of your order — the logistics team confirms your date within a few days, and rush delivery is available for a fee. Tell us your deadline and we'll be straight about whether we can hit it.

A Note on How We Answer

Every number on this page is the same one we give paying customers, and each answer errs toward the caveat rather than the sale — where the honest response is "it depends on your municipality" or "renting beats buying at your timeline," that's what's written. Container buying rewards a little homework and punishes none, so read whichever linked guides match your situation, then call with the sharp questions. The two-minute version for the impatient: a used cargo-worthy 20ft delivered near Newark is the value benchmark of this market; measure your run-up before you fall in love with a 40ft; and never accept a quote without the grade and delivery written into one number.
